SPIRITUALISM began its history near the mid-19th century and, in some parts of the world, became all the rage as people practiced seances and believed that they could communicate with those who had passed on. The Spiritualist Association of Great Britain (the SAGB) is the British spiritualist organization. It was established in 1872. One notable believer was Arthur Conan Doyle and Queen Victoria. Doyle once remarked that he would rather be known for his psychic work than that of his novels.
Offering a highly unusual and engraved, with clear identification, a presentation piece, approximately 10 inches long, noting that it was “Presented to Mr. & Mrs. T. Harris As A Memento Of Their Cutting First Sod Of The Tredegar (Wales) 1st National Spiritualist Church On March 27th 1929.”
We find a church of this name is still in existence.
The shovel is silver plate with some minor wear. The handle appears slightly bent to the right. Otherwise in very good to excellent condition and a superb example of this religious movement.
