Smoke is believed to have been in CO G 4th Carolina Cavalry. Research included on the 4th North Carolina Cavalry.
One page, 5 ½ x 9, “I take the opportunity of sending you a few lines, hoping that they may find you and the children all well...We have reached Greensboro all safe. We got with the horses last evening and we will go with the horses from here. Each man will take his horse. I have no news that are worth writing to you. Our rations are the same as it was. We do draw flour and bacon. The fight in Virginia are still going on with great success on our side and I hope the worse will soon be over. They are 25 bushels of corn coming to you from Lieutenant Williams instead of 24...Daniel Smoke”
