WILLIAM J. MCKINLAY was the first African American to be Register of Mesne Conveyance in America.  He was named Register for the County of Charleston, SC, in December 1869. He was the sole political leader of substantial financial means who was elected to the state legislature. A copy of the statute and his death certificate, listing him as Mulatto, are included.

4 pp, 10 ½ x 15 ¾ DS, by McKinlay being a real estate title, June 24, 1876, for a lot of land owned bought by Frederick Berkhan of Charleston for four thousand dollars.

A very fine document. Folds, toning, one fold break, but still nicely intact with the green seal present.
