HARRY S. TRUMAN (1844 – 1972) was born in Lamar, MO, and became the 33rd President of the United States, ascending from Vice President, when President Franklin Roosevelt unexpectedly died in his fourth term.

Offering a copy of Truman’s autobiography, Mr. Citizen, in dust jacket, in very good condition, hardcover, first edition, 1961, 315 pages, beautiful two-toned cloth, published by Bernard Geis Associates of New York. Signed by Truman and two Missouri U.S. Senator Edward V. Long, best known for writing the final draft of the Freedom of Information Act, and Congressman William J. Randall, a friend of Truman’s.  Scarce copy signed by three important Democratic politicians.

Long also voted in favor of the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 1968, the 24th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the conformation of Thurgood Marshall to the U.S. Supreme Court. The 24th Amendment prohibits Congress from enacting a poll tax, which was aimed at restricting voting for African Americans.  Randall, a strong Truman ally, served on the Armed Services Committee and the Committee on Government Relations.

In very good condition but for light wear to the corners. The dust jacket is price clipped, chipping and small tears to the corners and spine ends. Some wear along the spine edges and flap folds.

Truman explains his reason for writing the book.  In small part, “...I have put off publication of this book for seven years because I did not want it to be self-serving...Since I am given to plain speaking, especially on matters where I feel it necessary to point up an issue, there are some passages in this book that may be interpreted as harsh to certain individuals. But nothing I have written is intended to be unfriendly to anyone.”
