    The 82nd PA Regiment was involved in nearly 30 battles during the Civil War, including Gettysburg, Antietam and Fredericksburg. Other battles included, Chancellorsville, Mine Run, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, First Battle of Petersburg, Appomattox Campaign.  The 82nd was a highly important regiment.

     

    Our private WILLAM H. FORBES writes to his Mother briefly about he and his fellow soldiers experience at Fredericksburg and having to replace lost items at their own expense and complains about not receiving any letters from his Mother.

    In small part, “...I have sent you two letters and get no answer from you...We are close to the rebels for they try and break through our pickets every night. But they can’t do it...I have got paid and only 12 dollars for my two months. We had to pay for things we lost in the fights of Fredericksburg, us poor privates have to stand well...My time is getting short. I have but 16 months to stay...with the help of the government...”
