Inscribed CDV of JOSEPH “J.B.” BENNETT (1825-1889), back stamp Hoag & Quick 100 West Fourth Street, Cincinnati, Ohio. Bennett was an insurance manager, agent and innovator in his field. His recollections of visiting Abraham Lincoln in his law office as an underwriter in 1858 are published in a 1911 book, The Career of a Country Lawyer, by C.W. Moores. In 1869, he was sued for libel by the Enterprise Insurance Company for $100,000 when he was employed as the General western manager of the Etna Insurance Company, alleging that Bennett authored and circulated an anonymous flyer claiming that the Enterprise Insurance Company was engaging in bad business.
