    JIMMY CARTER served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981. He was governor of Georgia prior to his election as president and has remained active in public life during his post-presidency.  In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work with the Carter Center. Carter’s tenure as president was a time of continuing inflation and recession as well as an energy crisis.
