SIR ARTHUR JAMES, 1ST EARL OF BALFOUR (1848 – 1930) was a British statesman who served as Scottish Secretary, Irish Secretary, 1st Lord of the Treasury, Prime Minister (1902 – 06), 1st Lord of the Admiralty and Foreign Secretary. In 1917, he issued the Balfour Declaration establishing a home for the Jewish people of Palestine.

One-page TLS Balfour, 7 x 9, Prestonkirk, Scotland, 1926 Sept. 24, to Lady Pentland. “I am delighted to that your son is kind enough to act as my Page on October 5th. It is not a very onerous duty, though, so far as the Chancellor is concerned, a very necessary one; as unfortunately the official dress which he has to wear is of such a character that on ceremonial occasions assistance is necessary to the wearer!

“I am rather stupid about matters of dress, but I am confident that a black velvet suit will be quite correct.”

One-fold. Excellent condition.

Provenance Christies.
