TENNESSEE WILLIAMS (1911-1983) was a gay American playwright whose works include The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. He is considered among the three foremost playwrights of the 20th century along with contemporaries Eugene O’Neill and Arthur Miller. Williams was raised in St. Louis, Missouri, and after years of obscurity, at age 33, he became famous with the success of The Glass Menagerie. The play reflected his own unhappy family background. Much of Williams’ most acclaimed work has been adapted for the cinema.
