The JEWISH DEFENSE LEAGUE (JDL) is a far-right organization in the United States whose stated goal is to “protect Jews from anti-Semitism by whatever means necessary.” According to the FBI, the JDL has been involved in plotting and executing acts of terrorism within the United States.

Responding to MORRIS BERMAN, Chairman of the National Committee on Justice and Morality in Government, February 1, 1971, NOBLE MELENCAMP, [December 21, 1928 – May 22, 2015] Staff Assistant to President Nixon, responds to Berman’s concerns about JDL.

One page, TLS, 8 x 10 ¼, on White House stationary, Melencamp writes, “Mr. [Ron] Ziegler has asked me to reply to your letter of January 10 regarding the actions of the Jewish Defense League. I wish to thank you for your expression of concern in this important matter.

“It is clear that the violence espoused by the JDL not only violates our own laws but also hurts the cause of Soviet Jewry. Moreover, public harassment of Soviet citizens and establishments in the United States can only reduce our influence in diplomatic channels or at the United Nations when we seek to persuade the Soviet Union to modify its policies.

“We appreciate your offer of assistance with the JDL. However, you will recall that in an exchange of messages with the leaders of the American Jewish Community on January 11, President Nixon stated that the Administration, in cooperation with local authorities, ‘will use every means at its disposal to prevent such acts and to bring to justice those who perpetrate them.’  We hope that the publicly stated positions of responsible Jewish organizations and of the Government will have the desired effect on the JDL.”
