JAMES MICHENER (1907-1997) is best
known for his many epic historical novels, which have sold an estimated 75
million copies worldwide. He was also a noted philanthropist, having
contributed more than $100 million to universities, libraries, museums and
others. Michener was raised as a Quaker. From 1944-46, he was a naval historian
in the South Pacific, the setting of his early fiction. His Tales of the South
Pacific was adapted as the Broadway musical South Pacific. One-page excerpt
