OLIVER WOLCOTT, JR. (1760-1833) was Secretary of the Treasury (1795-1800) succeeding Alexander Hamilton. He was also Governor of Connecticut. Wolcott was a graduate of Yale in 1778, despite serving in the Continental Army—first performing duties as his father’s aide-de-camp and then as regimental quartermaster.
Offering a Revolutionary WAR-DATE pay order, 6 ½ x 8 ¼, addressed to John Lawrence, Treasurer, for one thousand pounds payable to Joshua Elderkin (his signature on the verso) and dated Nov. 11, 1779. Also signed by Fenn Wadsorth, John Chenward and Samuel Lyman as Members of the Pay Table Committee. Boldly countersigned perpendicular over their signatures by Wolcott as Auditor.
Folds, toning. Several small holes with one at the center of Wolcott’s signature. Otherwise excellent condition.
