WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT (1857-1930) was the 27th President of the United States (1909-1913) and the tenth Chief Justice of the United States (1921-1930), the only person to have held both offices. President Warren G. Harding appointed Taft to be Chief Justice. In 1901, President William McKinley appointed Taft Civilian Governor of the Philippines. In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt made him Secretary of War.

Very nice singe-page, TLS, 5 3/4 X 7 3/4, on Supreme Court letterhead, December 24, 1926, to his close friends Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Livingood of Cincinnati, Ohio. “Dear Charley and Lily Livingood: Thank you for your kind card of Christmas greetings and New Year’s good wishes, which Nellie and I cordially reciprocate. May we all meet at dear Old Murray Bay in good condition next summer, including the children. Sincerely yours, Wm H. Taft.” Taft imposes “affectionately” above the close.

Very light paper clip mark at the top. Light toning.
